Why second-hand clothes shops are booming

9 May

Where most high street shops are fading, charity and vintage shops are thriving. Whilst it is miserable that we are losing some of our favourite high street stores because of the recession, it is giving charity shops a boost.

Charity shops used to be knitwear, bric-a-brac and hand-me-down clothes maintained by elderly women. However the abandoned shops are now in full swing and sweeping profits due to the shops closing down frequently on the high street. There has also been a return of vintage clothing, and where else better to pick up a bargain and get yourself a fashionable item that isn’t worn by the majority of shoppers?

According to Charity Retail Association, there are 7,700 charity shops in England which raise around £200 million per year. They get tax concessions because all the profits from a charity shop go to fund the work of the charity, which provides public benefit. They serve a charitable purpose so they benefit from exemption from corporation tax on profits. They receive 80% mandatory non-domestic relief which is funded by the central government, with a further 20% relief available at the discretion of local authorities.

Amanda Silkstone, 40 from Chesterfield works as a sales assistant at Age Concern in Chesterfield. She said that Age Concern hasn’t increased in business because of high street stores closing because “we can’t compete with Primark.” She thinks that the economy will pick back up again and that it’s just going through a slump.

High street music and DVD stores have suffered the most, as people can now get the same products online for a cheaper price; GAME and HMV have been affected by the recession. Fashion retailers such as; La Senza, Firetrap, Azendi, Pumpkin Patch, Peacocks, Barratts and T J Hughes are just a few of the popular chains that have either gone into administration or have closed due to the recession.

Charity shops have now caught up on ‘visual merchandising’, they now have shops on eBay and stock trendy up to date fashionable items that appeal to the younger generation. It’s not just elderly women hunting for collectables in charity shops; it’s also youths on the search for one-off individual items that the high street doesn’t offer. It’s no longer embarrassing to shop in those kinds of shops, quite the opposite in fact.

Au revoir high street stores, charity shops have made a comeback. Boutiques, independent stores and good old-fashioned bargain hunting is back.

TV dance shows enhance attractiveness in dance

8 May

Dance is now becoming a popular activity for people to participate in; Britain’s Got Talent, Got To Dance, Dancing On Ice and Strictly Come Dancing have boosted people’s perception of dance and has encouraged thousands to strut their stuff.

The huge rise in people taking to the stage and having a go at dance has resulted in more and more schools offering students dance as a subject involving in a range of genres from hip hop to ballet to jazz. Social dance is also being participated in by women all across the country doing the latest craze called Zumba, which is a Latin inspired, calorie burner as a form of exercise.

11 year old Callum Nicholls from Chesterfield, also known as bboy monster has entered the dancing scene by being a member of Sky’s 1 Got To Dance series 2, Trinity Warriors. Callum said he got into dancing by: “local activity day in Barrowhill where a street dance crew (Neo Angelos) came to put some classes on and noticed me straight away.”

Trinity Warriors is a break dancing/bboying crew from Derby, it has opened many doors for Callum. He said that he has been recently touring with the Diversity Digitalized Tour but juggling school work when touring can be a struggle, he said: “I make sure I do all my school work before I dance and also take lots of breaks.”

Callum said that even people who think they can’t dance should give it a go, he said: “Just be yourself and look for ways to stand out and bring new stuff to the table.”

Dancing is not everybody’s cup of tea; you might be shy or embarrassed to hit the dance floor even on a night out. Here is a video of people from Sheffield’s views on dancing and their signature dance move.

According to the Royal Academy of Dance, 1 in 5 British adults are now hitting the dance floor, and 21% of people have become more interested in dance as a result of TV dance shows. Why not give it a go by joining your local dancing crew and enjoy having fun, meeting new people and keeping fit.

Check out this weeks podcast, we are discussing Tulisa’s sex tape, the S Club 7 reunion, the hot weather and our Easter plans.

“I’m not going to sit here and be violated” said Tulisa after her sex tape leaked online

27 Mar

Day’s after the sex tape emerged N-Dubz singer, 23, Tulisa denied rumours that it was her performing a sex act on somebody. The tape got on to the internet on 19th March, charging viewers £3.90 to download it. The tape was suspended just hours later.

However, she was forced to come clean after the sex tape circulated the internet and released a confession and apology to her fans via YouTube two days later. The video was linked to her Twitter account, during the video she holds up two photographs of her and the other person in the video. The X Factor judge said that she feels ‘ extremely betrayed’.

The apology consists of Tulisa publically identifying the man in the video as her ex boyfriend Justin Edwards AKA MC Ultra. She says: “This isn’t unexpected for me; I got a call from a lot of mutual friends, people that know me that know him saying that apparently he has this footage of me that he’s been threatening to bring out for whatever reason to make money or to ruin my career”.

MC Ultra used his Twitter account @officialultra to deny her claims. He tweeted: “It’s nothing to do with me. #backtowork.”

The whole sex tape saga got even messier when Tulisa wanted payback by suing her ex boyfriend for breach of privacy and confidence at the High Court. DJ Ultra appeared in court on 26th March with Tulisa demanding £100,000 for the leaking of the sex tape, he strongly denies the claims. He also released a written statement saying: “Tulisa persuaded me that we should film ourselves”, and was implying that the footage was taken on his mobile phone.

The Pick and Mix crew discussed the leaking of the footage:

Meanwhile Tulisa has released a new song days after called “Young”.

Ben Bertram’s take on the fashion industry

27 Mar

Sheffield fashion designer sets his sights on moving to the fashion capital to make his mark specialising in men’s fashion.

Ben Bertram is a Fashion Design student from Sheffield Hallam University in his final year. “Ideally I would like to move to London in September, I’m interested in magazine work and fashion designing”, he says.

Once upon a time if a male or female picked up an expensive garment the designer would usually have been a male, such as Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. London Fashion Week has just passed and it seems that females are now taking the lead in fashion design. Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Sophie Hulme took to the catwalk to showcase their new collections.

Fashion is now dominated by women, the vast amount of fashion design students tend to be female. Ben said: “The past 10 years or so have been about women being empowered”.

Although men are now taking a step back from designing fashion, it is still said by many people that men do put on better fashion shows. “A lot of male designers tend to be gay, so they tend to be a bit more theatrical,” said Ben.

The ugly world of modelling: There are so many controversial issues surrounding the fashion industry, it is highly associated with anorexia, mental health problems and drugs. You have to be a tough cookie to enter this industry and be prepared to deal with issues surrounding the fashion world. Ben has mentally prepared himself to enter this industry, by already experiencing some of the issues surrounding models behaviour:

“I’ve been through that stage when I was younger, so personally I’ve kind of done with that now. You have to get to rock bottom to realise that it’s not really worth it.”

Ben said: “Pelayo Diaz is my biggest fashion icon, he is a model. He wears quirky designer clothes. He’s got a really unique take on things; he is polished without having a complete insane look about him. Anybody could wear it, it’s very fashion forward”.

Ben speaks about how he dresses himself on a daily basis: “I don’t like it when designers don’t dress very well. I’m inspired by what I wear by the research I’ve done so I know how to put the look together. However it does only take me five minutes to get ready.”

Ben is currently designing a ‘suburban boy’ theme which includes a lot of bling and gold embellishment. It is formal wear mixed with sportswear with tailoring aspects to it. He also writes for his blog, Dent-Online for part of his university project, it is aimed at young males who want fashionable up to date clothes without visiting the high street at affordable prices.

Love is in the air

9 Mar

The first Valentine’s Day was in 496 and is a day of the year that symbolises love, fertility and sweet gestures. Pope Gelasius was the third and last bishop of Rome of Berber origin in the Catholic Church, Gelasius declared Valentine’s Day on February 14th in memory of a 3rd century martyred priest in Rome.

The special occasion recently passed, were you a romantic heartthrob or do you think the most romantic day of the year isn’t worth the fuss? I ask the people of Sheffield what they did to mark the romantic occasion.

The February 14th might not be the only romantic date you have in your diary. This year we have 366 days in a year. Yes ladies it is leap year, will you be proposing to the love of your life on the 29th February? The opportunity to propose to your man only comes once every four years, according to an old Irish legend; St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men.

Would you take advantage of an ancient tradition and propose to a man? Good luck ladies, be brave, be romantic, be spontaneous and of course, be prepared for a lifetime of cleaning and ironing for someone else.

Would you ever propose to a man?

Kathryn Hollingworth, a sales assistant said: “I don’t think I would ever propose to a man, I’d want the man to make it all romantic and get down on one knee, I think it would be strange for a woman to do it”.

Tasmin Moore, a student said: “No way that’s a man’s job, its tradition”.

Laura Chapman, a student said: “I wouldn’t because its tradition that the man proposes so I’ve always believed that, it just doesn’t feel right I guess”.
